From 16 to 18 April, the international conference "The Baltic Sea Region, 1100–1400: Indigenous Societies, Cultures and Traditions in a Time of Changes" will take place in Tartu.
The conference focuses on the history of local peoples during the transition from prehistory to the Middle Ages. In addition to a range of specific topics, the broader themes include the role of indigenous communities in changing conditions and societies, hillforts, burial sites, and the arrival of Christianity. Archaeologists and historians from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Germany, and Denmark will present at the conference. Most of the presentations are based on archaeological source material. The central message of the conference is that the transition from prehistory to the Middle Ages was more gradual and multifaceted than is commonly assumed.
